Richard F. Progovitz (Progy)) 37 Elizabeth St. Biography
Born August 4, 1952, the son of Polish immigrants who instilled
in Richard an appreciation for the tradition of collecting and cooking with wild
mushrooms that led to his lifetime involvement in the field of Mycology (the
study of Fungi.) Johnson City High School – 1970 Class Graduate Vietnam Veteran; disabled and honorably discharged in Dec.,1973 Married for thirty-one years to Cheryl (School Nurse-RN), and
is the father of three children, Rich (Restoration), Shelly (CSI in Maryland)
and Gary (College Student in Computer Forensics at TC3 in NY). Holder of Degrees in Electrical (USAF) and Mechanical (Broome
Community College-SUNY) Engineering Elected as a Village Trustee in Johnson City, NY in 1984 for
one term of office. Mechanical Engineer for IBM and retired after 25 years of
service. Richard is an Inventor and
holds two Patents (filed in US and Europe), 1st Level Invention Achievement
Award (twelve inventions), and is the author of ten published technical papers
on high technology electronic packaging. After leaving IBM in Nov. 2002, Richard dedicated most of his
time and energy to mycology, and studied to become a Certified Mold Inspector
and Mold Contractor from CMICI (Utah). He
has been doing business as "Fungi by Progy" in New York State since
1995. In October 2003, his first book, Black Mold – Your Health and Your Home was published by The
Forager Press, LLC. A second book, Mold
Horror Stories, a non-fiction account of a number of families and their
nightmares caused by indoor molds is in the works for 2006.
These true stories led to mold remediations, home demolition, and new
home construction with mold at issue again. Fungi by Progy was named a New York State Small Business
Development Center Success Story in 2003, by SUNY (State University College of
NY). Member of the Binghamton Business Club In May 2004 he co-founded Ash & Progovitz Antimicrobials,
LLC - Certified Applicators of ÆGIS Microbe Shield – the only permanent,
bonded (non-leachable) antimicrobial available. Featured in the Healthy Life Magazine – Household Mold—a
two-page article in the Summer 2004 issue. On Aug. 9, 2004 Richard was a Guest on “Coast to Coast AM”
Radio Show (#1 Late Night Talk Show w/over
2 million listeners in any one hour) and interviewed by the famous George Noory. Member of the "National Association
of Certified Home Inspectors" (NACHI) and approved to provide Continuing
Education Unit Credits (CEUs) for indoor mold education. Environmental Education Foundation (EEF)

America Mycological Society) annual fungal Photo Contest in 1999 · Serving as President of the Susquehanna
Valley Mycological Society (SVMS) for the past 11 years. · Vice President and General Foray
Chairman of the NorthEast Mycological Federation for 2003. · On-call Mycologist with the Lourdes
Hospital's Poison Control Center to aid in identification of wild mushrooms in
instances of mushroom poisoning. · Lecturer on Fungi at- Broome County's
Finch Hollow Nature Center, the Southern New York State Forestry Association,
the Lion's Club, Cornell University Cooperative Extension, Tioga Co. Master
Gardeners, Roberson Museum for "Earth Days", Northeast Mycological
Federation Conference, Central New York Mycological Society at The College of
Environmental Science and Forestry at Syracuse University, and other local clubs
and organizations. · Publisher of two sets of edible and
poisonous Wild Mushroom Flash Cards,
which are similar to Baseball Cards. They assist in the identification of a
variety of wild mushroom species. The cards have been written about in Sports
Afield, Vegetarian Times and Bed & Breakfast magazines. · Reported about
in numerous Newspaper articles and Mycology Newsletters in the United States and
